The bad halitosis issue has many causes and here are some of them:
Infection of the soft tissues of the mouth are usually caused by bacterial infections (produced by air born germs or non-air born germs), that spread a bad smell caused by putrefaction, smell that usually the owners sense. In some cases, aside the bacterial aggression there can also appear a mycosis type of infection that can brig complications to the clinical picture.
A thin bacterial coating at teeth level may appear because of the defective oral hygiene, with the same effect over the exhaled air. This new formed thin coating is dental plaque and you can remove it with the help of noninvasive procedures (thorough dental brushing).
The accumulation of mineral salt at the dental plaque level, process called dental scald, that has severe repercussions on the dental health that is inflammatory reactions of the gums – decreasing the coverage area of the teeth – and even worse than that. It can have a disastrous effect on the joint of the tooth, which means it will start being mobile at first and the dog will end up loosing it.
Modifications in gastric acidity by diminishing the hydrochloric acid secretion (dyspepsia) creates the opportunity for the germs to develop and thus initiation of the fermentation processes followed by elimination of bad smelling gases that reach the environment and are sensed by the owner.
Because of the fact that halitosis may also produce health problems, a vet appointment is necessary in order to establish the exact causes of the disease. In some cases, the solution depends on the owner of the dog (like the case of a persistent oral hygiene of the dog), and in other case the problem may require a medical treatment from the vet.
Chewing Gum for Dogs
A Brazilian company has launched a new product: chewing gum for dogs. According to the Terra Noticias Populares publication, the Chiclet Company is already selling its products in most pet shops, attracting its customers with the “your dog’s bad breath will soon be gone” slogan.
Chewing gum for dog is not at all, what we know chewing gum to be. It has the shape of a bone and it is eatable leather delighting the dogs, cleaning their teeth, and refreshes their breath. Almost all dog owners end up complaining about the bad breath of the dog sooner or late. The reason is the same as in humans’ case: not brushing the teeth regularly. In fact, dog’s breath could be much fresher than humans’ because they do not eat stuff like garlic or onion, especially if they would brush their teeth twice a day, like us, humans do.
How do you realize if your pet has dental issues?
That is the easiest procedure ever, all you have to do is lift the dog’s upper lip and take a close look at its teeth. The plaque is a brown-reddish discoloration close to the gum line. Scald accumulations turn the healthy pink gums into red ones that start swelling. At this point, in the absence of a medical procedure, gingivitis is installing easily. This process generates a bad smelling breath. Even worse than that, it can also lead to the destruction of the jaw and loss of teeth.
